Forsyth Country Day School Appoints Valorie Baker as Next Head of School

Forsyth Country Day School is pleased to announce the appointment of Valorie Baker as the next Head of School, effective July 1, 2026. This exciting decision follows an extensive national search and reflects the Board of Trustees’ confidence in Ms. Baker’s leadership, experience, and commitment to the mission of FCDS.

The appointment was approved by the Board this week after a thoughtful and thorough process led by the Leadership Transition Committee. In evaluating finalists, the Committee considered multiple dimensions, including leadership experience, educational vision, and community feedback, before unanimously recommending Ms. Baker to the full Board for approval.

“I am honored and deeply grateful for the opportunity to join Forsyth Country Day School as its next Head of School. FCDS has a long tradition of excellence, community, and care, and I look forward to building upon that strong foundation.

I am eager to partner with the Board, faculty, staff, students, and families to continue advancing the mission of the school—preparing students not only for success, but for meaningful lives rooted in purpose and integrity.”

-VALORIE BAKER

Ms. Baker joins Forsyth Country Day from St. Johns Country Day School in Jacksonville, Florida, where she has served as Head of School since 2020. Previously, she served as Head of Middle School at the Webb School of Knoxville, Director of Auxiliary Programs at Palmer Trinity School, and Director of Counseling and Student Support Services at the Episcopal School of Jacksonville.

This move marks a return to Winston-Salem for Ms. Baker, who served as Head Volleyball Coach at Wake Forest University for 10 years earlier in her career.

With more than 20 years of independent school leadership experience, Ms. Baker has successfully guided two comprehensive five-year strategic plans that enhanced school performance and strengthened community partnerships. Her extensive work across divisions and departments—spanning curriculum design, faculty development, auxiliary programs, and athletics—gives her a holistic understanding of school life and the student experience.

In addition to her professional accomplishments, Ms. Baker holds a master’s degree in counseling psychology, a foundation that informs her deep commitment to student wellness and holistic education. Her mission-driven leadership and proven ability to build collaborative, thriving school communities make her a natural fit to guide FCDS into its next chapter.

Throughout the 2025–2026 academic year, Nathan Battle will continue to serve as Interim Head of School. The Board and entire FCDS community are deeply grateful for his steady leadership, thoughtful guidance, and unwavering dedication during this period of transition.

As the school looks toward the future, our focus will remain on delivering an exceptional educational experience for our students and ensuring a smooth transition as Ms. Baker joins the community next year.

We are thankful for the partnership and support of the Forsyth Country Day School community as we move forward together and prepare to welcome Ms. Baker in 2026.
