Dorothy Hutcheson is the Head of School Emerita of the Nightingale-Bamford School in Manhattan, where she served as head for 20 years. Since leaving Nightingale in 2012, she has maintained her connection to elementary and secondary education by consulting to schools on board governance and strategic planning, and by mentoring new heads of school. Dorothy earned her master of divinity degree at Union Theological Seminary in 2015 and was the interim chaplain at the Trinity-Pawling School. She was the founding head of The Greene School, a new pre-K through 4th grade independent school in West Palm Beach, Florida that opened in September, 2016.
A highly regarded leader in independent education, Dorothy has served on numerous educational boards, including the National Association of Independent Schools (where she chaired the governance committee), the Klingenstein Center for Independent School Education at Teachers College, and the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS) Commission on Accreditation. She has also been a trustee of several NYC independent schools and is the past president of many heads’ organizations, including NYSAIS, the Head Mistresses Association of the East, the New York City Guild of Independent Schools, and the Country Day School Headmasters’ Association. She continues to serve as a trustee of George Jackson Academy in New York City, a grade 4-8 independent school for academically talented boys from underserved communities, and of St. Paul’s School, an Episcopal boarding school in New Hampshire.
